Mieke Marple: Bad Feminist

Mieke Marple: Bad Feminist Start Date: Saturday 11/9/2019 — End Date: Saturday 12/21/2019 Admission:Free Ever Gold [Projects] presents Bad Feminist, a solo exhibition by Mieke Marple. Bad Feminist reflects on the ancient Greek myth of Medusa in the era of #MeToo. Taking its title from Roxane Gay’s book Bad Feminist: Essays (2014), in which the author describes a sexual assault she experienced as a child, Marple reflects on historical depictions of women and rape in light of today’s changing understanding of the power dynamics at play within society at large. While the details of the myth of Medusa have evolved overtime, in Ovid’s canonical telling, Medusa, the most beautiful of her three Gorgon sisters, is raped by Poseidon, god of the Sea, in the Temple of his wife, Athena. Enraged, Athena, god of Wisdom and War, punishes the mortal Medusa, instead of her husband, turning Medusa into a half woman-half serpent with snakes for hair and eyes that turn anyone she looks at to stone. In Ovid’s telling, Athena is justified in her punishment and it is Medusa’s beauty, not Poseidon’s lust or cruelty, that is blamed for both the rape and the subsequent violence acted against her. Marple’s paintings of Medusa are based on three canonical Italian sculptures. The first is Benvenuto Cellini’s “Perseus with Head of Medusa” (1550), which features the Greek hero holding up Medusa’s decapitated head as a sign of victory. The second is Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s “Medusa” (1640), considered conceptually avant-garde for its time in rendering the moment Medusa is turned into a monster with pathos and humanity. The third is Antonio Canova’s “Perseus with Head of Medusa” (1804), thematically similar to Cellini’s though less gruesome in its details. In Marple’s paintings, images of Medusa’s head are layered upon backgrounds of delicate lace, floral wallpaper, and luxury brand logos in garish colors. These signifiers highlight the status of these works as decorative objects and allude to the metamorphosis of Medusa into a symbol of luxury and excess with the adoption of her severed head as the logo for the fashion house Versace. This conflation of contemporary and classical narratives serves to reinforce the importance of the myth of Medusa as an allegory still relevant today, though greatly in need of #MeToo revision. Marc Horowitz: The Qualitative Validation Princi

Marc Horowitz: The Qualitative Validation Principle Start Date: Saturday 11/9/2019 — End Date: Saturday 12/21/2019 Admission:Free Ever Gold [Projects] presents The Qualitative Validation Principle, Marc Horowitz’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. The paintings and drawings on view extend the forensic system Horowitz began developing after visiting the Roman ruins in Milreau, Portugal, which inspired him to restage previously abandoned works using archeological motifs. Within Horowitz’s oeuvre, TQVP constitutes a dark chapter that explores the color palette he has used since his days as a Bay Area performance artist in the early 2000s. Long veering between various comedic roles, Horowitz has settled on something mute like Harpo Marx, deadpan in the way only an image could be: a dissected tableaux vivant where the lifelike turns against the abstract and serialized, where the counterpoint between organic and artificial forms becomes unsettled. Large, blackened canvases are spread throughout the exhibition space while towering monochromatic paintings cut them into a 3-dimensional grid. Ashen figures, burned into the black canvases, suggest skeletal impressions, the arboreal and humanoid remnants of an in-progress experiment. Testing the range of his impulses, Horowitz questions the degree of change, discordance, and ambiguity a body of work can withstand. How, for example, can improvisation and performativity rest within a system in which color and format, material and size are predetermined? TQVP is at times a painterly Rorschach test that asks the viewer to inhabit decisions made by the artist to expose the detritus of his own jokes, but it also seems like something or someone decided to go off script along the way. Or, that an off-color joke, though aborted, continues to make appearances, to refer to a glyph or key which would unlock deeper meanings if it were available. The whiteboards Horowitz has stationed in the gallery speak to the consequence of acknowledging such a key. Alas, some mysteries remain precisely within the surface on which they were inscribed, alluding to and denying their secret in the same gesture. MaheshKale" The Alchemist" concerts by

MaheshKale" The Alchemist" concerts by Mahesh Kale on 20th Oct in the Bay Area Start Date: Sunday 10/20/2019 — End Date: Sunday 10/20/2019 Admission:Level I: $45 ($39 early bird before Sep 30) Level Hi everyone! Let’s rewind the clock about four years… to the cusp of the musical phenomenon that was about to sweep audiences off their feet and create a new wave of appreciation for Indian classical music. That phenomenon was the 2015 musical film “Katyar Kaljat Ghusli” and you have all been a part of the exhilarating musical movement that has followed. Now some of you may know that the movie is actually a revival of the 1960’s hit musical with the same title. It’s hard to believe that much of the film’s music — that today plays from our iPhones and bluetooth speakers — was actually composed and first popular over 60 years ago! But what is it about this music that is so enchanting, so timeless, and so inspiring that it has attracted people from all walks of life and especially the younger generation? Who was it that seeded this inspiration? ICMA Foundation is very excited to bring to you our humble tribute to the original creator of this music, and to one of the most prolific Indian classical musicians of all time, in a very special concert presented by his youngest disciple and ICMA’s very own Mahesh Kale: “The Alchemist: Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki – The Maestro with a Golden Touch” with narration in English, and in Marathi. Alchemy is an ancient belief, whose practitioners sought purity and perfection…it is believed that they could turn ordinary metals into gold. Padmashree Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, known fondly as Abhishekibua, was such an alchemist of music, widely acclaimed for his deep perfection of Indian classical music and for his Midas touch that moved audiences beyond words. What is not as commonly known was the sheer magnitude of music that he conceived and created…from rare ragas to film songs to abhangs to the mid-20th century revival of Marathi natya sangeet, Abhishekibua is credited with hundreds of musical marvels. National Award-winner Mahesh Kale is Abhishekibua’s youngest disciple, and has dedicated his life to carrying forward his guru’s musical legacy and philosophies, and to spreading the joy of music. On October 20th, in this very special concert, Mahesh Kale will not only take us through the depth and breadth of Abhishekibua’s music, but will share glimpses of the guru who inspired him. Joining him will be an ensemble of stellar traditional instrumentalists from India – Nikhil Phatak (tabla), Rajiv Tambe (harmonium), Prasad Joshi (pakhawaj), and Kedar Gulavani (violin). This event is brought to you in collaboration with our community partner Maharashtra Mandal Bay Area (MMBA). Location: 5001 Great America Pkwy Santa Clara Contact: Purva purvagujar@gmail.com URL: http://www.icmafoundation.org.
